Concentration Classes Side by Side

Every class on the scale, its band of aromatic compounds, its typical figure and its wear time in hours.

Parfum or extrait carries 15–30% aromatic compounds, typically about 20% by IFRA figures. It is the top of the scale and the longest-wearing band, reaching 6 to 8 hours on skin.

Esprit de parfum is a seldom-used strength of 15–30% sitting between eau de parfum and parfum. It shares parfum's band but rarely appears on a label, so most ranges jump straight from eau de parfum upward.

Eau de parfum holds 15–20% aromatic compounds, typically about 15%. This is the band that covers a full evening without reaching parfum's oil load.

Eau de toilette holds 5–15%, typically about 10%, and cologne fragrance is released rapidly, lasting around 2 hours. Eau de toilette itself lasts from 2 to 4 hours.

The share of aromatic compounds printed in the class name is what predicts how loud the scent feels and how many hours it stays with the percentage of aromatic compounds, the perfume oils used. Reading the band on this table therefore predicts both how loud the scent will feel and how many hours it will hold.

The bands overlap at the 15% mark: the top of eau de toilette meets the bottom of eau de parfum. Where a label prints an exact percentage, that figure decides the case.
